Aptos rose from the remains of Diem—the blockchain Facebook attempted to build but was ultimately blocked by global regulators. Mo Shaikh and Avery Ching, former Meta engineers, gathered the Diem team and created Aptos as a new L1 using the Move language, raising over $400 million before its mainnet launch.

When Meta dissolved the Diem project, over 300 staff members had to find new work. One part of the team created Aptos, while another team created Sui (another Move-based blockchain). This effectively made Diem a 'university' that produced two of the industry's leading blockchains simultaneously.
