Timeline

StarkWare was founded in 2018 by Israeli scientists led by Eli Ben-Sasson, a pioneer of STARK proofs. They developed a ZK-Rollup using STARK (not SNARK) which is post-quantum secure and does not require trusted setup. Starknet mainnet launched in 2021 and STRK token became tradable in 2024.

STARK proofs have a special property: they are 'post-quantum secure' — meaning even if quantum computers exist in the future, they cannot break the system. Unlike SNARKs which may be vulnerable to quantum attacks and require a 'trusted setup ceremony' that could compromise the entire system if breached.
