Charlie Lee, a Google engineer, developed Litecoin in his spare time by forking it from Bitcoin. He reduced the block time from 10 minutes to 2.5 minutes and increased the supply to 84 million LTC. It was fairly launched with only 150 coins pre-mined before being released to the public.

Litecoin surged for the first time during the 2013 Bitcoin bull run, reaching a market capitalization of $1 billion and becoming the largest altcoin of that era.

In December 2017, when LTC hit its peak price, Charlie Lee sold all of his Litecoin holdings to avoid conflicts of interest with the community. He stated that his tweets had an impact on the price, which he considered unfair.

Litecoin became the first cryptocurrency to activate Segregated Witness (SegWit), which was later adopted by Bitcoin. It also successfully executed the world’s first Lightning Network transaction.

Canary Capital's Litecoin Spot ETF began trading on Nasdaq under the ticker LTCC, becoming the first Litecoin ETF in the United States. This confirmed that LTC remains relevant in the institutional market even after 14 years.
