NEAR Protocol began as an AI startup, not a blockchain. Illia Polosukhin and Alex Skidanov initially set out to build AI that could teach computers to code, but found global payment systems inadequate. This led them to build a new blockchain to solve those issues. Illia is also one of the eight co-authors of the seminal 'Attention Is All You Need' paper that laid the foundation for modern AI.
