Timeline

Netflix was founded on August 29, 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph in Scotts Valley, California. Hastings got the idea after being charged a $40 late fee for Apollo 13. It started as a DVD-by-mail service. Blockbuster rejected an offer to buy Netflix for $50M in 2000, then went bankrupt in 2010. Today Netflix has 300M+ global subscribers.

💡

Did You Know?

The name 'Netflix' comes from 'Net' (internet) + 'flix' (slang for movies). The founders tested the idea by mailing CDs (not DVDs). Netflix was once offered to be acquired by Jeff Bezos for $14–16M in the late 1990s, but Hastings rejected it — even though co-founder Marc Randolph thought it was a fair deal.
