How to Trade Intel (INTC)

Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore left Fairchild Semiconductor to found 'NM Electronics' in Mountain View, CA, on July 18, 1968. They later renamed it Intel, a portmanteau of 'Integrated Electronics,' after purchasing the naming rights from the hotel chain Intelco. Arthur Rock, the man who coined the term 'venture capitalist,' raised $2.5M in just two days.

Intel launched the 4004, the first 4-bit microprocessor commercially available. It integrated all logic onto a single chip the size of a thumbnail; previously, this required a room-sized circuit board. Later, the 8086 (1978) established the foundation for the x86 instruction set still used in PCs and servers today.

IBM chose the Intel 8088 for its first IBM Personal Computer, establishing Intel as the standard chip for the entire PC industry. As the IBM PC became the standard, Microsoft's DOS was designed for x86, creating the 'Wintel' (Windows + Intel) duopoly that dominated computing for over 30 years.

Intel launched the 'Intel Inside' campaign in 1991, branding a semiconductor chip for end consumers for the first time in history. Consumers began to recognize and specifically request 'Intel Inside' when purchasing PCs. This campaign became a staple marketing case study worldwide.

Intel lost significant market share in the AI chip sector to NVIDIA and lagged behind AMD in CPU performance across several generations. Missteps in the foundry business and delays in AI accelerators led Intel to announce layoffs of over 15,000 employees, shaking its 30-year market-dominant position.
