How to Trade S&P 500 (SP500)

Standard & Poor's officially launched the S&P 500 on March 4, 1957, covering 425 industrial, 25 railroad, and 50 utility companies. It was the world's first computer-generated index, utilizing electronic punch cards from Boston-based Melpar Inc. It was designed to be more comprehensive than the 30-stock Dow Jones.

John Bogle's Vanguard Group launched the Vanguard 500 Index Fund on August 31, 1976. It became the first mutual fund allowing ordinary retail investors to invest in the entire S&P 500 index, shifting the paradigm from active management to passive investing.

On October 19, 1987, the S&P 500 plummeted 20.47% in a single day, marking the largest single-day loss of all time. The primary causes were program trading and portfolio insurance strategies triggering a cascade of sell orders. However, the index recovered and closed positive for the overall year.

The S&P 500 closed at 676.53 on March 9, 2009, following the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy and the housing crisis, marking a 56.8% drawdown from its 2007 high—the largest since WWII. From that point, it rallied over 400% during the following decade.

The S&P 500 reached an all-time high near 6,145 in February 2025, driven by AI adoption, Big Tech earnings, and a resilient US economy. The index now spans AI, EV, and biotech firms that have largely replaced traditional industrial sectors.
