dYdX was founded in 2017 by Antonio Juliano, a former Coinbase engineer and Princeton graduate. He built the first perpetual DEX that rivaled CEX volume and invented 'flash loans' before Aave. dYdX migrated from Ethereum → StarkWare L2 → its own dYdX Chain on Cosmos in 2023 for full decentralization.

Antonio Juliano wrote that dYdX invented flash loans before Aave, but Aave got most of the credit because 'they launched the product better'. He learned that vertically integrating the stack often results in a better user experience, but you still need strong marketing.
